What is Wagner Cove
Wagner Cove is a small, secluded spot on the southern edge of The Lake in Central Park. The area features a rustic structure surrounded by trees with a stunning view of the water, making it a popular spot for:
intimate weddings
elopements
proposals
The cove is named after Robert F. Wagner Jr. (former New York City mayor) and is one of the most picturesque locations in Central Park. It is located on the west side of the park, near West 72nd Street, and can be accessed by a short walk down a wooded path.
Quick Facts
Capacity: 10 people (only 2 small benches under the roofed structure)
Busyness: Low - expect light foot traffic. This is one of the more private locations in the park but it is not a secret.
Best Season(s): Summer and Fall
Nearby Locations: Cherry Hill, Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace
The History of Wagner Cove
Wagner Cove has a rich history dating back to the 1800s but the venue as it stands today was built in 2016 during a reconstruction of 5 boat landings in the park.
The cove was originally used as a boathouse and a location for boating parties. Later, it was used as a place for ice skating during the winter months. In the 1930s, a bronze bust of Richard Wagner was installed in the cove, and it was later named after him.
Wagner Cove has since become a popular spot for couples eloping in Central Park. Its beauty and history make it a unique and romantic destination for couples from all over the world.
How to Plan Your Wagner Cove Wedding
If you're interested in having your wedding at Wagner Cove, here's what you need to know to plan your special day:
Choose Your Wedding Date and Time: Wagner Cove is available for weddings year-round, but keep in mind that it may be more crowded during peak season. Consider the time of day as well, as sunrise and sunset can provide a beautiful backdrop for your wedding photos.
Get a park permit: The Central Park Conservancy is responsible for managing and maintaining Central Park, and they can help you with your permit.
Find an Officiant: You'll need to find someone to officiate your wedding ceremony. You can hire me, a professional NYC officiant. Alternatively a friend or family can perform your ceremony ONLY if they are authorized in NYC.
Obtain Your Marriage License: In order to get married, you'll need to obtain a marriage license from the City Clerk's Office. You should apply for a license no more than 2 months before your wedding day, because the license will expire in 60 days..
Hire a Photographer and/or Videographer: You'll want to capture the memories of your special day, so consider hiring a photographer and/or videographer to document your wedding.
Ceremony and Reception Options
Wagner Cove is a popular spot for wedding ceremonies, but there are also options for receptions nearby.
The nearby Loeb Boathouse offers a beautiful location for a reception, with a stunning view of The Lake. Other restaurant options are Tavern on the Green located inside the park, Pappardella for post-wedding Italian dishes and pizza, or Alice’s Tea Cup for a brunch celebration if you get married early in the day.
Best Time of the Year to Get Married at Wagner Cove
Wagner Cove is a beautiful location year-round, but the best time to get married there depends on your preferences. Spring and fall provide mild temperatures and beautiful foliage, while summer provides long days and warm weather. Winter weddings can be especially romantic, with the possibility of snow and ice skating on The Lake.
Dress For The Season
New York experiences hot Summers as well as freezing Winters, so the weather shouldn’t be an afterthought. Not only does the temperature fluctuate but the humidity could affect your bridal makeup or hair.
Consider the temperatures and choose attire that is comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. For summer weddings, lightweight and breathable fabrics are recommended, while fall and winter weddings may require warmer clothing.

Central Park offers a variety of activities and attractions for visitors. Consider adding some of these activities to your wedding weekend itinerary:
Horse-drawn carriage rides
Central Park Zoo
Bethesda Fountain and Terrace
The Conservatory Garden
