Why have a Vow Renewal?

Many people think that vow renewals are only for couples who have been married for a long time or for those who may have had a rocky start to their marriage.

But I'm here to tell you that a vow renewal is for any couple who wants to reaffirm their love for one another and celebrate the journey they've been on together.

It's a beautiful way to remember why you fell in love in the first place and to recommit to each other in front of your family and friends.

One of the most common reasons couples choose to renew their vows is to celebrate a milestone anniversary.

This can be a significant anniversary such as a 10th, 25th, or even 50th!

It can also be a less traditional milestone such as a 3rd or 12th anniversary. It's a way to reflect on the years that have passed and to celebrate the love that has grown stronger over time.

A vow renewal ceremony can also be a way to include loved ones who were unable to attend the original wedding ceremony. This can be especially meaningful for couples who had a small wedding ceremony or who had children since their first wedding that they’d love to include now.

Another reason couples choose to renew their vows is to overcome a difficult period in their relationship. This could be a time of financial stress, health issues, or even infidelity.

Custom vow books are a great way to add a personal element to your vow renewal ceremony.

Renewing vows is a way to acknowledge a tough phase that they have been through together and recommit to each other and the relationship. It's a powerful symbol of re-affirmation, healing, and moving forward.

Some couples choose to renew on the anniversary of their wedding day, while others opt for a different date that holds special meaning to them.

There is no right or wrong time to renew your vows. It's ultimately a personal decision that should be based on the couple's reasons for wanting to do so.

How to renew vows in New York City

Renewing your vows in the big apple can be a magical and memorable experience for you and your partner.

In simplest terms, here are steps you need to pull this off:

1. Choose an officiant: Legally, you don't need a registered officiant to conduct the ceremony since you are already married. However I would highly recommend considering a professional officiant for the best results. It's always a good idea to check with the venue where you plan to hold the ceremony to see if they have any restrictions or requirements for officiants.

2. Choose a venue: New York City offers a wide variety of venues to choose from, such as Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, or even the Empire State Building! You can also choose to renew your vows in a religious building or a hotel. You should consider the size of the venue and the number of guests you plan to invite, as well as the ambiance and location.

3. Plan the ceremony: Once you have chosen a venue and an officiant, it's time to plan the ceremony itself. This is where a professional officiant will be a big help! You can choose to write your own vows or repeat after the officiant. You can also choose to incorporate any customs or traditions that are meaningful to you and your partner.

4. Hire a photographer and videographer: To capture the memories of your special day, you may want to hire a professional photographer and videographer to document the ceremony. Asking a friend or family member to do this may sound like a good idea, but trust me, this isn’t the area you want to skimp on!

5. Celebrate: Once the ceremony is over, it's time to celebrate with your guests. You can choose to have a reception, a dinner, or any other kind of celebration that suits your style.

I've been a professional wedding officiant for a while now, and I've seen some of the most beautiful vow renewal ceremonies in NYC.

Here are my top 7 picks for the best places to renew your vows in the city:

Central Park - Nothing beats a romantic ceremony in Central Park. You have countless picturesque locations to choose from in the park, including the iconic Gapstow Bridge and Ladies Pavilion.

The High Line - This park elevated above the NYC streets offers stunning views of both the city and the Hudson River. It's a perfect intimate wedding venue idea in NYC.

The Brooklyn Bridge - Exchange your vows with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge as your backdrop. It's a stunning location for a ceremony and the post-ceremony photos are guaranteed to be Instagram-ready.

The Top of the Empire State Building - This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to exchange vows at the top of one of the most famous buildings in the world. The views are breathtaking and the memories will last a lifetime.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Met is a great location for a vow renewal ceremony. The museum's rooftop garden is a beautiful spot for a ceremony, with views of some Central Park and plenty of city skyline to see.

The New York Public Library - The library's Rose Main Reading Room is a beautiful location for a vow renewal ceremony. The room's architecture is stunning, and the ceremony will feel like it's straight out of a fairytale.

How to Make The Most Out Of Your Vow Renewal Ceremony

Here are a few tips to help your vow renewal to be the best day ever

Choose the right location:

The venue for your vow renewal is so important since It sets the tone for the entire ceremony. Try to pick a location that has special meaning to you and your partner. Whether it's the place you first met, got engaged, or somewhere you've always dreamed of visiting. Either way the location should have a special significance.

Personalize your ceremony:

Make your vow renewal ceremony unique to you and your partner by adding special touches that reflect your personality. That can be a favorite song, poem, or even a scene from your #1 movie. Another option is including a unity ceremony like a sand ceremony, a wine blending ceremony, or even a tree planting ceremony.

Game to decide who says vows first

Involve your loved ones:

Make your family and friends feel like a part of the ceremony by involving them in the planning process. You could ask them to give a reading or speech during the ceremony, or even ask them to be part of the wedding party.

Capture the moment:

Hire a professional photographer and videographer to capture the ceremony so you can look back on it and remember it forever. Take lots of candid shots and selfies with your loved ones to remember the day.

Have fun:

Most importantly, have fun! This is a special day for you and your partner, so please be present and enjoy every single moment.

I hope these tips help you make the most out of your vow renewal ceremony. Remember, I'm here to help you every step of the way, so just let me know if you need anything. Happy renewing!
